Free agent pitchers Luis Gabriel Moreno and Alejandro Crisostomo have each received an 80-game suspension from Major League Baseball due to positive tests for performance-enhancing substances as part of the minor league drug program.
Moreno tested positive for Nandrolone, while Crisostomo’s test returned positive results for both Boldenone and Nandrolone, according to the statement from the commissioner’s office.
Moreno, a 26-year-old right-handed pitcher, was recently released by the New York Mets’ Class A Brooklyn Cyclones on Tuesday. During his time with Brooklyn, he accumulated a record of 5 wins and 1 loss, with an earned run average (ERA) of 5.33 across 12 relief appearances this season. Prior to this, he was part of the San Francisco Giants organization from 2016 to 2023.
Crisostomo, 24, also a right-handed pitcher, was let go by the Minnesota Twins on August 24. He recorded 0 wins and 1 loss with a high ERA of 7.13 while playing for the Florida Complex League Twins this year. Originally signing with Boston in 2017, he spent 2018 in the Dominican Summer League with the Red Sox before moving to the Twins and playing with their DSL team in 2023.
In total, 19 players have faced suspensions this year due to positive drug tests. This includes eight players who were suspended under the minor league program and nine who fell under a new program specifically for minor league players assigned outside the United States and Canada. Furthermore, two players have been suspended under the major league drug program this year.
Among those suspended is Noelvi Marté, a 22-year-old infielder recognized as the top prospect for the Cincinnati Reds, who missed the first 80 games of the season after testing positive for Boldenone. Additionally, Toronto Blue Jays infielder Orelvis Martínez was handed an 80-game suspension on June 23 due to a positive test for the performance-enhancing drug Clomiphene, which was announced just two days following his major league debut.
