NEW YORK — The Attorney General of New York announced an investigation on Friday regarding the tragic death of a woman who was fatally struck by an unmarked police vehicle in Brooklyn.
The victim, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, was lying in the East New York neighborhood’s streets when a Toyota minivan hit her just after 6 p.m. on Wednesday, according to law enforcement. She was subsequently transported to a hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.
A representative from the police confirmed on Friday that the vehicle involved was indeed a police car, and the driver was an active-duty officer.
Responding to the incident, Attorney General Letitia James stated that her office has initiated an investigation, which is a procedural requirement under New York state law whenever a police officer is involved in a person’s death.
Additionally, the NYPD’s highway district’s collision investigation unit has also launched its own investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
