The Chicago White Sox have finalized a one-year contract with experienced outfielder Austin Slater worth $1.75 million, as announced on Wednesday.
As part of the agreement, Slater has the potential to earn an additional $500,000 in performance bonuses. For instance, he could receive $50,000 for participating in 50 games and would earn $75,000 for each of 75 and 100 games played. Furthermore, bonuses are available for plate appearances, with $50,000 for 100, 150, and 200 plate appearances, while achieving 250 and 300 plate appearances would net him $75,000 each.
Slater, who will celebrate his 32nd birthday next month, posted a batting average of .209 last season, hitting two home runs and driving in 18 runs over the course of 84 games with the San Francisco Giants, Cincinnati Reds, and Baltimore Orioles. In his eight-year career playing for the Giants, Reds, and Orioles, he has a lifetime batting average of .252, with a total of 40 home runs and 171 RBIs.
The White Sox are in a rebuilding phase after experiencing a challenging season last year, finishing with a dismal record of 41-121, which set a new marker for the most losses in a modern major league season. In response to these struggles, the organization appointed Will Venable as their new manager on October 31, replacing Pedro Grifol who was dismissed in August, along with interim manager Grady Sizemore.
With these changes, the White Sox are looking to bounce back and improve their performance in the upcoming season.
