INGLEWOOD, California — James Harden has achieved a significant milestone by claiming the No. 2 spot for most 3-pointers made in NBA history.
The 33-year-old guard for the Los Angeles Clippers hit his 2,974th career 3-pointer on Sunday night, surpassing the legendary Ray Allen, who previously held the spot.
Harden accomplished this feat while facing the Utah Jazz, sinking his record-breaking shot from the right wing with 6:09 left in the first quarter.
Currently, the only player ahead of him is Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors, who has an impressive total of 3,782 3-pointers.
Harden’s achievement is particularly noteworthy considering the number of games played; he reached this milestone in just 1,086 games, whereas it took Allen 1,300 contests to hit 2,973 shots from beyond the arc.
“Both of those guys are extraordinary shooters,” commented Clippers coach Tyronn Lue last week, highlighting the talent of both players.
Harden stands out in NBA history as one of only three players to make over 300 3-pointers in a single season, having recorded 378 in 2018-19.
Joining him on this exclusive list are Curry, who accomplished this feat five times including a record-setting 402 in the 2015-16 season, and Klay Thompson, who made 301 in the 2022-23 season.
In addition to his prowess from long range, Harden is ranked 15th on the all-time NBA scoring list and holds the 13th position in assists.
Notably, LeBron James is the only other player to feature in the top 15 for scoring, assists, and made 3-pointers, sitting at the top of the scoring leaderboard while ranking fourth in assists and eighth in 3-pointers.
Ray Allen initially passed Reggie Miller to claim the top spot for 3-pointers made during the 2010-11 season, maintaining the record for more than a decade until Curry took over during the 2021-22 season.
