PHILADELPHIA — Temple University has parted ways with head coach Stan Drayton following three seasons marked by disappointing records. Drayton’s overall record during his tenure was 9 wins and 25 losses, with a conference record of 4 wins and 18 losses in the American Athletic Conference. His dismissal came just one day after the Owls secured a narrow victory over Florida Atlantic University, winning 18-15 with a field goal in overtime.
Everett Withers, who has been serving as the defensive coordinator, will take over as the interim head coach for the remaining two games of the season. In a statement regarding the coaching change, athletic director Arthur Johnson expressed optimism about the future of Temple football, stating that the evolving landscape of college football presents new opportunities for the program. He emphasized the goal of competing for conference titles and consistently qualifying for bowl games, aiming to create a program that resonates positively with fans, alumni, and students alike.
Under Drayton’s leadership, the Owls struggled significantly, finishing with 3-9 records in both of his initial seasons, and currently holding a 3-7 record this year. Their victories this season came against teams such as Utah State, Tulsa, and FAU—collectively boasting a record of 8-22. Drayton acknowledged his time at Temple, stating his gratitude for the opportunity to lead the team while wishing his players success in their future endeavors both on the football field and in life.
As the season approaches its conclusion, Temple will face off against UTSA on the road and then return home to host North Texas, both of whom are on the cusp of achieving bowl eligibility with one additional victory. Drayton’s contract this season was valued at $1.9 million, according to salary reports.
