NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Roy Alexander found the end zone twice, and Zach Calzada contributed with a touchdown pass, leading Incarnate Word to a 27-20 victory over Stephen F. Austin on Saturday, which secured the Southland Conference title for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals, ranked sixth in the FCS and holding a record of 9-2 overall and 6-0 in conference play, are one game ahead of Southeastern Louisiana with just one game remaining. This victory marks the fourth time in seven years that UIW has claimed the Southland Championship. Their earlier win against the Lions, 34-31, three weeks prior has also ensured their automatic spot in the FCS playoffs.

During the match against the Lumberjacks, UIW’s defense was robust, allowing only four field goals in the first 53 minutes of gameplay. The Cardinals took a significant lead of 27-12, buoyed by a 7-yard touchdown run from Dekalon Taylor, a 13-yard run from Alexander, and a 5-yard touchdown pass from Calzada to Alexander. Additionally, Brack Peacock contributed to the scoreline with two successful field goals.

Calzada had a challenging game following an impressive performance the previous week, where he threw for five touchdowns against Lamar. In this match, he completed 15 of his 32 passing attempts for a total of 205 yards but was intercepted three times.

Taylor was the leading rusher for UIW, accumulating 74 yards on the ground. Alexander made the most of his opportunities, scoring on his single rushing attempt and hauling in six passes for 69 yards.

For Stephen F. Austin, quarterback Gavin Rutherford recorded 21 completions on 35 attempts for 209 yards, although he also faced two interceptions during the contest. His efforts included a 25-yard touchdown pass to Kylon Harris in the fourth quarter, adding to the team’s total.

Overall, this victory positions Incarnate Word strongly as they head into the conclusion of the regular season, solidifying their dominance in the Southland Conference.
