CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Quincy Crittendon had an impressive performance, completing 34 out of 50 passes for a total of 340 yards and contributing two touchdowns as Samford triumphed over Chattanooga with a score of 36-13 on Saturday.
In addition to his passing efforts, Crittendon also rushed 18 times for 59 yards, adding a rushing touchdown to his tally.
The game kicked off with Samford (4-6, 3-3 in the Southern Conference) driving 69 yards in 13 plays, however, they settled for a 23-yard field goal from Wilson Beaverstock. Crittendon later connected with Brendan Jenkins on a 38-yard touchdown pass along the right sideline, giving the Bulldogs an early 9-0 lead after the extra-point attempt failed, with 12:38 remaining in the second quarter.
Chattanooga responded when Javin Whatley returned the next kickoff for a 99-yard touchdown. Shortly thereafter, Crittendon’s pass was intercepted by Alex Mitchell, which set the stage for Jude Kelley’s 49-yard field goal, putting the Mocs (6-5, 5-3) ahead 10-9 with 8:41 left in the first half.
However, the momentum shifted after Will Thorley rushed for an 18-yard touchdown, returning the lead to Samford at 16-10. Kelley again added points for Chattanooga with a 27-yard field goal just before halftime, but Rias immediately answered by returning the kickoff for a spectacular 100 yards, bringing the halftime score to 23-13.
Chattanooga’s Sam Phillips stood out among the receivers, totaling eight catches for 66 yards.
This loss marks the second defeat for the Mocs, who are currently ranked No. 25 in the FCS coaches poll (tied with Butler), having lost two of their last three games.
