SAN ANTONIO — In a decisive performance, Owen McCown led UTSA to a commanding 48-27 victory over North Texas on Friday night, throwing for an impressive 379 yards and two touchdowns.
The Roadrunners (5-5, 3-3 American Athletic Conference) kicked off the scoring midway through the first quarter when Kevorian Barnes rushed in a touchdown from the 1-yard line, creating an early lead.
Following the subsequent drive by North Texas (5-5, 2-4), Zah Frazier intercepted quarterback Chandler Morris, positioning UTSA with favorable field conditions.
In just two plays, McCown connected on a 51-yard touchdown pass to David Amador II, extending UTSA’s lead to 14-0. The team maintained control, finishing the first half with a significant 27-7 advantage.
Although North Texas fought back, narrowing the gap to 33-27 in the fourth quarter, it was not enough. Morris completed a 14-yard touchdown pass to Blair Conwright, capping off a swift four-play, 75-yard drive with 12:27 remaining on the clock.
UTSA’s Robert Henry then solidified the game, executing powerful runs of 2 and 83 yards. Henry netted 168 rushing yards on 20 attempts, while Amador showcased his receiving ability with 122 yards from nine catches.
For North Texas, Shane Porter delivered a noteworthy performance, rushing for 193 yards on 13 carries, including touchdown runs of 79, 43, and 39 yards.
The statistical battle favored UTSA, as they outperformed North Texas with a total yardage of 681 to 480.
This matchup marked the 13th instance that the Roadrunners faced the Mean Green, making it the third most frequently played series in UTSA history. Historically, UTSA leads this series 8-5, including a strong record of 6-1 when playing in the Alamodome.
Notably, the Roadrunners have maintained their momentum by winning the last three encounters, including a previous victory on November 4, 2023, where they triumphed 37-29 on the road.
