Blue Jackets defeat Penguins 6-2, ending their six-game losing streak

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Columbus Blue Jackets broke their six-game losing streak with an impressive 6-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday night, thanks in part to strong performances from Zac Werenski and Dmitri Voronkov, who both contributed a goal and an assist.
Elvis Merzlikins was a standout in goal, making 23 saves to secure the win. The Blue Jackets’ offensive output included goals from Zach Aston-Reese, Mathieu Olivier, Damon Severson, and Cole Sillinger, bringing their record to 6-8-2 and marking their first victory since October 30.
The Penguins saw goals from Anthony Beauvillier and Michael Bunting but struggled defensively throughout the night. Starting goaltender Tristan Jarry, who hadn’t played since October 16, managed to make 34 saves, though the team has now lost five of their last six games, dropping them to 6-10-3.
Sean Monahan recorded the 300th assist of his career during Voronkov’s goal, finishing the night with two assists, while Merzlikins celebrated his 200th game in the NHL.
The takeaway for the Penguins highlighted ongoing defensive challenges, as star player Sidney Crosby assisted on a goal but failed to score, leaving him just two goals shy of hitting the 600 mark in his career.
Conversely, the Blue Jackets found a much-needed offensive rhythm, netting at least three goals for the first time in seven games. They maintained a lead against a Metropolitan Division rival that has historically performed well against them.
A pivotal moment in the match came early in the third period when Voronkov scored his second goal of the season, pushing the Blue Jackets’ lead to two.
In an impressive display of teamwork, fifteen different Blue Jackets players recorded points throughout the game, showcasing their collective effort in the victory.
Looking ahead, both teams are set to play again next Friday night, with the Penguins gearing up to face off against the San Jose Sharks and the Blue Jackets hitting the road to take on the Montreal Canadiens.
