SAN ANTONIO — In an impressive display of skill, Victor Wembanyama scored a career-high 50 points, leading the San Antonio Spurs to a 139-130 victory against the Washington Wizards on Wednesday evening.
Wembanyama showcased his shooting ability by making 8 of 16 attempts from beyond the arc, also a personal best. This win marks the second consecutive victory for San Antonio in the current season.
Jordan Poole put forth a strong effort for Washington, contributing 42 points to the team’s total; however, this defeat marked the Wizards’ sixth consecutive loss.
At just 20 years and 314 days old, Wembanyama became the fourth youngest player in NBA history to reach the 50-point milestone, following in the footsteps of notable players like Brandon Jennings, LeBron James, and Devin Booker.
Previously, Wembanyama’s highest scoring game was 49 points, which he achieved during a thrilling 130-126 overtime win against the New York Knicks.
For the third consecutive game, Wembanyama made six or more shots from beyond the three-point line, further proving his prowess from long-range.
Additionally, Devin Vassell made a solid comeback, scoring 17 points in his third game since undergoing surgery to repair a fractured right foot during the offseason.
In terms of highlights, Wizards player Alexandre Sarr managed to block one of Wembanyama’s shots in the second quarter and later dunked on him in the third quarter. Sarr concluded his performance with 12 points, two rebounds, two assists, and a block in 25 minutes of gameplay.
Wembanyama’s achievement makes him the eighth player in Spurs history to reach the 50-point mark, with David Robinson holding the all-time franchise record of 71 points set against the Los Angeles Clippers on April 24, 1994.
A pivotal moment in the game came when Wembanyama, needing just two points to reach 50, calmly nailed an 18-foot jumper, bringing the Spurs’ lead to 115-98 with 8:49 left in the game.
A notable statistic from this matchup is that Wembanyama has become the first player in the history of the league to achieve a combination of 20 three-pointers made and 25 blocks within a six-game timeframe.
Looking forward, the Spurs are set to host the Los Angeles Lakers this Friday in the final matchup of a five-game homestand, while the Wizards will be competing against Atlanta in a concluding game of their own five-game trip.
