TURIN, Italy — Jannik Sinner received the trophy for concluding the tennis season ranked No. 1 in the world, celebrated in front of a home crowd during the ATP Finals on Monday.
Sinner’s remarkable year included triumphs at both the Australian Open and the U.S. Open, marking his first two Grand Slam victories. His position at the top of the rankings was confirmed mathematically a month prior.
“There’s no better place to celebrate this achievement,” Sinner expressed, as his mother Siglinde looked on with tears of joy. “I appreciate all the support you have given me.”
At just 23 years old, Sinner becomes the 19th player to finish the year ranked No. 1 and the 29th male player to achieve this milestone in the history of the sport.
Boris Becker, a former world No. 1, was present during the trophy presentation and remarked, “I believe he is the player to beat for many years to come.”
In the ongoing ATP Finals, Sinner began his campaign with a victory over Alex de Minaur and is set to face Taylor Fritz in a rematch of the final from the U.S. Open on Tuesday.
This marks Sinner’s first competition at home since the revelation of two positive drug tests earlier this year, which occurred before he secured the U.S. Open title.
The World Anti-Doping Agency has previously appealed the decision to clear Sinner of any misconduct, and the final verdict in this matter is anticipated in early 2024.
