KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Bo Nix did everything he could to help the Denver Broncos bring an end to the Kansas City Chiefs’ undefeated season.
However, a block during the crucial field goal attempt proved to be the deciding factor in the match.
The rookie quarterback made a strong comeback following a disappointing outing against Baltimore. On Sunday, he dissected what was known to be one of the top defenses in the NFL, completing 22 of 30 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns, all without an interception. Nix demonstrated composure while guiding the Broncos down the field for what could have been the game-winning kick.
Unfortunately for him, the Chiefs managed to block the field goal, resulting in a narrow 16-14 defeat for Denver.
“It doesn’t sting unless you care,” Nix reflected. “Everyone in that locker room is feeling the pain because we all put in the hard work and dedication. Eventually, things will turn in our favor.”
“The simple choice is to give up,” he continued, “but I believe our team is going to bounce back stronger.”
Nix’s performance was not without its faults, particularly when he encountered pressure. Twice during the game, he found himself being sacked, which led to significant losses that ultimately forced Denver to punt. This challenge with pressure isn’t new, as he faced similar circumstances, including four sacks in the earlier heavy loss to Baltimore.
Nevertheless, amidst the electrifying atmosphere in Arrowhead Stadium, Nix produced several noteworthy plays, igniting hope for the Broncos (5-5) that they may have finally found a quarterback capable of competing with Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs (9-0) in the AFC West.
An early highlight was Nix’s short pass to Devaughn Vele in the second quarter, putting the Broncos up 7-0. Later, he delivered a challenging 32-yard throw to Courtland Sutton that extended the lead to 14-3.
“Overall, I believed he performed well,” said Broncos head coach Sean Payton about Nix’s effort. “He showed a lot of guts.”
The second half proved to be more challenging for both Nix and the Broncos. Kansas City started to adjust to the Broncos’ tactics. Denver’s initial drive of the half was thwarted by a holding penalty, followed by a 17-yard sack by Nick Bolton on the next drive. The third drive ended without any progress, particularly compounded by a false start on the punt.
“Nix did a commendable job of operating within the system,” Bolton commented. “He made some challenging throws.”
Even so, Nix and the offense were left to watch as their defense attempted to maintain a 14-13 lead.
With just over ten minutes remaining, Mahomes managed to convert a crucial third-and-13 with a 31-yard pass to DeAndre Hopkins. Not long after, Mahomes again connected with Travis Kelce for another third-down conversion. However, when he missed Kelce in the end zone on another third down attempt, Kansas City was forced to settle for a field goal from Harrison Butker.
Nix returned to the field with under six minutes remaining, fully aware that a field goal could secure the win. He made solid passes to Marvin Mims and Sutton to convert a third down, before finding Sutton once more and adding a six-yard run from Audric Estime on a critical third-and-1. Shortly after, he connected with Sutton again for 13 yards, placing the Broncos at the Chiefs’ 17-yard line with the chance to run the clock down.
Everything seemed to align perfectly until the Chiefs thwarted Wil Lutz’s potential game-winner.
“I think every team practices their offense in the last four minutes of a game. To execute that drive and take five or six minutes off the clock is what every team aims for,” Nix explained. “They just made one more impactful play. In what felt like it should be our moment, it slipped away from us.”
