BOSTON — In an exciting overtime finish, Brady Tkachuk found the back of the net just 21 seconds into the extra period, enabling Ottawa to secure a 3-2 win against the Bruins on Saturday night. This victory was particularly significant for Linus Ullmark, who made his return to Boston after being traded to Ottawa in June.
Ullmark, the recipient of the 2023 Vezina Trophy, enjoyed a successful run in Boston, boasting an impressive 88-26-10 record over three seasons. However, his position was challenged last season when Jeremy Swayman took over during the majority of the playoffs.
The game saw Tkachuk score with a wrist shot during a fast-paced 2-on-1 breakaway, leaving Swayman no chance to make the stop. Ottawa’s success was bolstered by a power-play goal from Josh Norris and a late tying score by Michael Amadio, who also found the net with a wrist shot from the right circle in the second period.
Boston briefly took control of the match in the second period, when Pavel Zacha and Brad Marchand scored just 15 seconds apart, giving the Bruins a 2-1 lead. Zacha managed to score with a turnaround backhand shot, followed closely by Marchand, who capitalized on a loose puck near the crease.
Prior to the game, the Bruins honored Ullmark with a video tribute that showcased his incredible contributions, including helping the team achieve NHL records for wins and points during a standout two seasons ago. Ullmark, clearly moved, watched from near the bench and later skated to the blue line to wave to the cheering fans in appreciation of their support.
As for the game stats, the Senators outperformed the Bruins with 34 shots to Boston’s 16, marking only their second victory in seven road games this season. Meanwhile, the Bruins have struggled to find consistent momentum this season, with a recent record of three wins in their last four games.
A notable moment occurred before warmups, when Ullmark and Swayman, who share a close friendship, embraced at center ice. They shared a light-hearted pose with an arm around each other for a picture, showcasing their camaraderie despite being opponents for the night.
Additionally, the Bruins had a glaring statistic, ending regulation with more giveaways (20) than shots on goal (15), illustrating some of their challenges during the game.
Looking ahead, the Senators are set to face off against Toronto on Tuesday, while the Bruins will be on the road against St. Louis on the same night.
