LUBBOCK, Texas — In a decisive victory on Friday night, JT Toppin showcased a stellar performance, scoring 25 points, while teammate Kevin Overton added 19 points to help Texas Tech secure an 86-65 triumph over Northwestern State.

Toppin exhibited exceptional accuracy, finishing the game hitting 10 of 11 attempts from the field. Additionally, Chance McMillan contributed 13 points and Kerwin Walton added 11 points for the Red Raiders, who improved their record to 2-0. Darrion Williams narrowly missed out on a double-double, ending with eight points and ten rebounds.

On the other side, Jon Sanders II was the standout for the Demons, leading his team with 18 points as they encountered their first loss of the season, bringing their record to 1-1.

Texas Tech had set a program record with 16 three-pointers in their previous game against Bethune-Cookman but faced a dip in long-range shooting, managing only 6 of 19 from beyond the arc this time.

Walton’s three-pointer at the 13:26 mark of the first half propelled the Red Raiders to a comfortable 21-9 lead. Toppin further solidified the advantage with a three-point play at the 7:29 mark before halftime, extending the lead to 29-17. From that point onward, Texas Tech maintained a double-digit lead for the duration of the game.

At halftime, the Red Raiders were ahead 42-28, and their lead swelled to 20 points when Overton hit a jumper, making it 83-63 with just 1:33 left on the clock.

With this latest win, Texas Tech has now established an undefeated 8-0 historical record against Northwestern State, with all victories being secured on their home turf.
