BATON ROUGE, La. — On a dominating Friday night, Flau’jae Johnson showcased her skills with 24 points and seven rebounds, leading No. 7 LSU to a decisive 95-36 victory over Northwestern State.
Mikaylah Williams contributed 16 points, while Kailyn Gilbert and Aneesah Morrow added 13 and 11 points, respectively, for the Tigers, who improved to 2-0 on the season.
For Northwestern State (1-1), Vernell Atamah was the standout player, ending the game with nine points and seven rebounds.
The Lady Demons struggled significantly in the match, scoring only 20 points in the last three quarters. During this stretch, they managed to make just 6 out of 43 attempts from the field, which is a mere 13.9% shooting accuracy, coupled with an unusually high 21 turnovers that allowed LSU to capitalize with 34 points.
Key Observations
The Lady Demons faced an uphill battle throughout the contest, completely outmatched after a brief moment in which they scored six points at the end of the first quarter, trailing by 10 points at that point.
In contrast, LSU coach Kim Mulkey relied on a guard-dominated team strategy that emphasized aggressive full-court defense and quick-paced gameplay. She continuously rotated her players to maintain energy and keep the squad fresh on the court.
Pivotal Moment
The turning point came when LSU led by 10 at the end of the first quarter. They intensified their defensive tactics, resulting in a staggering period where Northwestern State had more turnovers (18) than points (14) in the second and third quarters combined. LSU capitalized during this phase, outscoring their opponents 50-14, and entering the fourth quarter with a commanding 74-28 lead.
Notable Stat
Northwestern State experienced a significant dry spell, missing 21 of 22 shots from the field starting late in the second quarter until Mya Blake finally broke the drought with a layup remaining 7:16 in the game.
Looking Ahead
Northwestern State will return home for a matchup against Arkansas Baptist on Tuesday evening.
Meanwhile, LSU will host Charleston Southern on Tuesday morning for their annual “Field Trip” game, inviting local schoolchildren to join in on the excitement.
