RALEIGH, N.C. — A 23-year-old man has been charged with multiple offenses, including assault, following a series of gunfire incidents targeting vehicles along a bustling highway in North Carolina, which led to one individual being injured, according to local police reports from Friday.
The man faces serious allegations, including one count of assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to kill, in addition to 11 counts related to discharging a firearm into occupied vehicles or homes, the Raleigh police stated in an official announcement.
Additionally, another individual who was apprehended at the same time as the suspect has since been released without facing any charges. Authorities previously indicated that this individual was present at the residence where the suspect was arrested.
The incidents of gunfire along the highway and in surrounding residential areas have sparked significant public concern in the vicinity of North Carolina’s capital. Nonetheless, no motives have been revealed at this time.
The situation gained notoriety after multiple reports of shots fired emerged during the Wednesday morning rush hour along a section of Interstate 40 in Raleigh and neighboring Cary. Following these reports, several similar shooting incidents were also documented.
According to officials, eight different vehicles were hit by gunfire—two incidents occurred on Monday, four on Wednesday, and another two on Thursday. Furthermore, the police noted that four additional shootings targeted homes on Wednesday as well. The police chief of Raleigh confirmed on Thursday that these shooting events were interrelated.
Among those affected, a woman was shot in the leg on early Monday while driving on I-40. Fortunately, her injuries were reported as not life-threatening, illustrating the potential dangers posed by these ongoing attacks.
