ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J. — Firefighters faced additional challenges on Friday as another wildfire ignited in New Jersey amid ongoing dry conditions.
At least four fires were actively burning across the state, affecting areas from the Pinelands in the central and western regions to the suburbs surrounding New York City.
The most recent blaze erupted along the Palisades Interstate Parkway in Englewood Cliffs, located in Bergen County and across the Hudson River from New York City.
While this fire was smaller compared to the three others reported, it added to the existing strain on firefighting resources. As of late Thursday, those three fires had each consumed less than a square mile, and updated fire status information had not yet been provided by the New Jersey Forest Fire Service by Friday morning.
The new fire was approximately 30% contained and did not pose a threat to nearby homes.
Conditions on Friday worsened compared to the previous day, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a red flag warning. This alert indicated the possibility of strong winds and low humidity, which could significantly enhance fire spread.
Moreover, New Jersey has not recorded any measurable rainfall for over a month, marking a new weather pattern and contributing to the heightened fire risks across the state.
