GREENVILLE, N.C. — Katin Houser showcased an impressive performance on Thursday night, completing 17 of 22 passes for 343 yards and five touchdowns while also rushing for a score, leading East Carolina to a decisive 49-14 victory over Florida Atlantic.
The game kicked off explosively as Houser connected with Chase Sowell for a 50-yard touchdown on just the second play from scrimmage. Florida Atlantic responded with a three-and-out, and East Carolina capitalized on their next offensive drive. After Rahjai Harris made successive runs of 6, 6, and 19 yards, Houser found Winston Wright Jr. for a 47-yard touchdown pass, quickly extending the lead to 14-0 with 10:33 remaining in the first quarter.
Wright continued to shine, catching an 8-yard touchdown pass from Houser, bringing the score to 21-0 as the first quarter came to a close. For East Carolina, Anthony Smith made a significant impact with three receptions totaling 120 yards and a touchdown, while Wright finished the night with three receptions for 80 yards.
On the other side, Florida Atlantic struggled, falling to 2-7 on the season and extending their losing streak in the American Athletic Conference to nine games, tying them with Mississippi State for the second-longest current conference losing streak in the nation. Kent State holds the record for the longest, having lost 13 straight games in the Mid-American Conference.
The Owls faced further challenges when starting quarterback Cam Fancher exited the game with a shoulder injury during the second quarter and did not return. His replacement, Kasen Weisman, a transfer from Colorado, completed 20 of 35 passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns, while also leading the team in rushing with 41 yards on six carries. Weisman orchestrated a lengthy 14-play, 91-yard drive that ultimately stalled when Gavin Gibson intercepted a pass in the end zone.
In the latter stages of the game, Weisman connected with Jabari Smith Jr. for a 2-yard touchdown pass, reducing the deficit with about six minutes left in the second quarter. CJ Campbell Jr. later added a 2-yard touchdown reception, rounding out the scoring with just over a minute remaining in the half.
