Wilson and Adams of the Jets envisioned receiving passes from Rodgers at a dinner gathering this offseason.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — A little over a year ago, Garrett Wilson received an unexpected phone call from Davante Adams, who was in New York City at the time. Adams invited the Jets wide receiver to dinner with some friends, providing an excellent opportunity for Wilson to connect with one of his football idols and discuss the game they both love.

“I mean, little did we know that this is what it was going to come to at that time,” Wilson reflected recently. “You know, you can obviously hope. We threw it out there that you might play together and then all of the sudden, it came full circle and here we are.”

This season, the Jets successfully traded for Adams from Las Vegas on October 15, reuniting him with his long-time friend and former Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Adams had made a move to the Raiders during the offseason of 2022, followed by Rodgers’ arrival in New York a year later.

“Really, I was just trying to pick his brain about Aaron and talk about his connection,” Wilson shared. “He’s one of my favorite players, man, growing up, and he knows that. And I wasn’t shy to tell him that when I first met him at that dinner. And I think just because of that and the way he felt about my game, we really had an enlightening convo for me.”

During last week’s 21-13 victory against Houston, Wilson and Adams showcased their potential as a formidable pair. They lit up the stadium, affirming the visions they had shared during their past conversations.

“One hundred percent, yeah,” Adams expressed when asked if the game lived up to their expectations. In the game, Wilson shined with nine receptions for 90 yards and caught two stunning one-handed touchdown passes, one of which was compared to some of the most incredible catches in NFL history. Meanwhile, Adams, who missed some games due to a hamstring problem, recorded seven catches for 91 yards and scored his first touchdown in three games with the Jets.

“I knew the whole time it wasn’t necessarily going to happen in the Pittsburgh game,” Adams commented, referring to his debut on October 20, where he caught three passes for 30 yards. “You’ve got to learn to play with each other. And that comes from the top, the coaches figuring out which plays to call and how to space out plays for different guys throughout the game. And obviously working with Aaron as well. So it takes time.”

Adams noted that impatience from fans was understandable but emphasized the need for practice and familiarity to ensure success. “But it was something that people were a little impatient about wanting to see. Now I know I feel a lot more comfortable.” He expressed optimism about the offense finding its rhythm.

Wilson’s outstanding performance earned him the title of AFC Offensive Player of the Week, and his impressive stats show he currently leads the NFL with 60 receptions and 94 targets. Adams, in just three games with the Jets, has tallied 14 catches for 175 yards and one touchdown.

“Every day I come in, I’m thankful to be able to have someone like that, that I can pick their brain and just see how they go about their business,” Wilson remarked. “That boy’s cold. And it’s been like that for a long time and stuff like that doesn’t happen by accident.”

The chemistry between Wilson and quarterback Rodgers is also developing nicely, with the duo looking to establish a profound connection as the season progresses. With another touchdown, Rodgers and Adams could tie Ben Roethlisberger and Antonio Brown for the fourth-most touchdowns by a quarterback-receiver duo, totaling 78 in both regular-season and playoff games.

Adams further praised Wilson, saying, “If I’m his favorite receiver, it’s because of the details and the things that I put in, which obviously he’s interested in learning because it’ll only help him in his career as well.” He emphasized the similarities between them, noting how sometimes icons become fans of the younger talent.

Looking ahead to the next game against Arizona on Sunday, Wilson is focused on achieving team success. “Hopefully just a dub,” he said with a smile. “You know, we’ve got to find a way to stack some wins.”
