MADISON, Wis. — Devin LeMahieu is set to continue his role as the Republican majority leader in the Wisconsin Senate after being re-elected by the GOP caucus in a meeting held on Thursday. In a statement, LeMahieu highlighted that a key priority for Republicans in the upcoming legislative session will involve redistributing the state’s funding surplus back to families.
LeMahieu, who hails from Oostburg, has been a representative in the Wisconsin Legislature since 2015, covering regions of Manitowoc, Sheboygan, and Fond du Lac counties. He previously held the position of majority leader during both the 2021-22 and 2023-24 legislative sessions.
However, this session will see LeMahieu guiding a reduced majority. The recent changes to district boundaries, initiated by Democratic Governor Tony Evers last year, contributed to Democrats gaining four previously Republican-held districts in the recent elections, thus diminishing the Republican majority from 22-11 to 18-15. This shift has ignited optimism among Democrats regarding their chances to regain control of the chamber in the 2026 elections.
In addition to the Senate, the newly drawn electoral maps also allowed Democrats to achieve significant victories in the Assembly, where they successfully flipped ten Republican districts and narrowed the Republican majority from 64-35 to 52-44, with three races still to be decided.
Leadership decisions among Assembly Republicans are anticipated on November 12, with Speaker Robin Vos indicating his intention to seek re-election for the top position in the chamber.
