NEW YORK — Baseball Digest has recognized Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Luis Gil from the New York Yankees as the rookies of the year.

Skenes, who was the first overall selection in the 2023 amateur draft, made an impressive impact in his inaugural season in the major leagues. He made his much-anticipated debut on May 11, and quickly became a standout player, leading to his selection as the starting pitcher for the National League during the All-Star Game held on July 16 in Texas.

In his first season, the 22-year-old right-handed pitcher achieved a remarkable record of 11 wins and 3 losses, accompanied by an impressive 1.96 ERA across 23 starts. Throughout 133 innings on the mound, he struck out 170 batters while allowing 32 walks.

Skenes garnered nine out of eleven first-place votes for the National League award, as determined by a panel of baseball writers and broadcasters, with the results published on Thursday. Following him in second place was outfielder Jackson Merrill of the San Diego Padres, who secured the remaining two first-place votes.

On the American League side, Luis Gil had an equally impressive season, achieving a 15-7 record with a 3.50 ERA over 29 starts while helping his team capture the league title. In his 151 2/3 innings pitched, he recorded 171 strikeouts.

Gil, 26 years old, was selected as the top pick on six ballots for the American League recognition. Close behind was Colton Cowser, the outfielder for the Baltimore Orioles, who received three first-place votes. Mason Miller, closer for the Oakland Athletics, took third place with two first-place votes.
