Democrat Julie Johnson successfully secured a seat in the U.S. House representing Texas in the recent elections.
As a trial attorney, she will make history as the first openly gay member of Congress from the state of Texas.
Johnson has previously served three terms as a state legislator, where she was a strong advocate for LGBTQ rights at the Capitol.
In her new role in Congress, she has emphasized that women’s health care will be a significant focus for her, pledging to support legislation to enshrine abortion rights at the federal level.
Johnson is taking over the position from Colin Allred, another Democrat who vacated the seat to pursue a campaign for U.S. Senator against Ted Cruz.
The announcement of Johnson’s victory was made at 11:01 p.m. EST, marking a notable moment in Texas politics.
