TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Democratic Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick has secured her reelection to a U.S. House seat for Florida.
She ran without any opposition in the 20th District, which encompasses Fort Lauderdale and the western part of Broward County in the southeastern region of the state.
This district is recognized as one of the most Democratic-leaning areas in Florida, with Democrats significantly outnumbering Republicans by nearly a 5-1 margin.
Cherfilus-McCormick first claimed this seat in a special election held in January 2022, which was necessitated by the passing of long-serving Representative Alcee Hastings.
Following that, she also triumphed in the general election later that same year.
Notably, Cherfilus-McCormick has made history by being the first Black woman to serve as a representative for this district.
