DENVER — The Denver Nuggets’ power forward Aaron Gordon is likely to be sidelined for several weeks due to a strained right calf, according to two sources familiar with the situation.
These sources requested anonymity as details on the injury have not been officially disclosed. Gordon sustained the injury during the first quarter of Monday’s match against Toronto and did not return to the game.
This development is a significant setback for the Nuggets, who have already been coping without guard Jamal Murray, who is currently on concussion protocol and has missed the last two games.
This season, Gordon has been contributing an average of 15.4 points and 6.7 rebounds per game, while clocking in about 30 minutes of playtime each night.
The 29-year-old recently signed a lucrative four-year contract extension worth $133 million, just before the current season commenced. His role was pivotal in the Nuggets securing their first NBA championship in 2022-23.
Originally drafted by the Orlando Magic as the fourth overall pick in 2014, Gordon was traded to the Nuggets in March 2021 and quickly became a fan favorite, known for his spectacular dunks and energetic style of play.
In a heartfelt tribute to his late brother Drew, who tragically passed away in a car accident in Oregon last spring, Gordon changed his jersey number to No. 32 before the start of this season.
