LISBON, Portugal — On Tuesday, the spotlight in the Champions League shifted from Erling Haaland to another talented Scandinavian forward. While Haaland, playing for Manchester City, was unable to convert a penalty, Viktor Gyokeres shone brightly for Sporting, nailing two penalties as part of his impressive hat trick in a 4-1 triumph for the Portuguese side.
Gyokeres, representing Sweden on the international stage, is currently one of Europe’s most prolific strikers, boasting a remarkable tally of 21 goals across 17 matches for Sporting in this season.
Regarded by many as the best striker globally, Haaland had his moment to shine from the spot after a handball was called. However, his attempt in the 69th minute went awry, as his shot ricocheted off the crossbar, denying him a chance to score.
In contrast, Gyokeres made the most of his opportunities. He successfully converted a penalty in the 48th minute, bringing Sporting’s lead to 2-1, and followed it up with another successful spot kick in the 80th minute to secure the 4-1 victory for his team.
