KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Patrick Mahomes showcased his skills on the field by passing for 291 yards and recording three touchdowns as the Kansas City Chiefs remained undefeated with a thrilling 30-24 triumph over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a rainy encounter on Monday night.
DeAndre Hopkins made significant contributions with two touchdown receptions for the Chiefs, who surged in the fourth quarter to seize a 24-17 lead with just over four minutes remaining. However, the Buccaneers mounted a last-minute comeback led by Baker Mayfield, who connected with Ryan Miller in the end zone with only 27 seconds left.
Opting for an extra point instead of pursuing a risky two-point conversion, Tampa Bay sent the game into overtime. The decision backfired when Mayfield called tails for the coin toss, which resulted in heads. With the ball first in overtime, Mahomes executed a flawless drive, completing all five of his pass attempts, culminating in a 2-yard touchdown run by Kareem Hunt, adding to his impressive 106-yard rushing performance for the night.
Notably, Travis Kelce had an impressive outing, recording 14 catches for 100 yards while Taylor Swift cheered on from a suite. Meanwhile, Hopkins finished with eight receptions for 86 yards, helping the Chiefs extend their winning streak to 14 games, dating back to the previous season. This remarkable start also marked Kansas City as the sixth Super Bowl champion to launch a season with eight consecutive victories.
Mayfield concluded the game for Tampa Bay with 200 yards and two touchdown passes, helping the Buccaneers, though their recent form saw them falter with four losses in their last five games.
The first half was particularly special for two players who had dreams of playing in Arrowhead Stadium, each finding the end zone. Rachaad White, a Buccaneers running back, grew up just ten minutes from the stadium but never had the chance to attend a game due to financial constraints. His journey through Division II and junior college eventually led him to the NFL as a third-round pick. White celebrated his first touchdown at Arrowhead with a spirited 7-yard run, momentarily giving Tampa Bay a 7-3 advantage by tossing the football into the stands.
Mahomes’ new teammate, Hopkins, also made an impact on his home debut. After previously securing four passes, he made a remarkable 35-yard catch surrounded by defenders, setting up his own touchdown just moments later, which he celebrated with a dance reminiscent of a scene from “Remember the Titans.” The Buccaneers began the second half strong, with a touchdown pass to Cade Otton and a field goal extending their lead to 17-10.
Not to be outdone, the Chiefs responded aggressively in the fourth quarter. Mahomes led a 70-yard drive that ended with a touchdown throw to Samaje Perine, even while nursing a slight injury. He later found Hopkins again, lifting Kansas City to a 24-17 lead after a third-down conversion.
Though Tampa Bay quickly went three-and-out on their next possession, they regained possession thanks to their defense. Mayfield then orchestrated another scoring drive, culminating in a touchdown to Miller before the end of regulation, setting the stage for overtime.
In injury updates, the Buccaneers saw linebacker Yaya Diaby briefly exit with a chest issue, while cornerback Josh Hayes dealt with calf cramps. On the Chiefs’ side, receiver Mecole Hardman and defensive end George Karlaftis both sustained injuries but returned to the action.
Looking ahead, Tampa Bay will be looking to regroup as they take on the San Francisco 49ers next Sunday, while the Kansas City Chiefs will host the Denver Broncos on the same day.
