Celta Vigo ended their two-match losing streak in La Liga with a narrow 1-0 victory against Getafe on Monday, thanks to a key contribution from experienced forward Iago Aspas.
Aspas delivered a precise cross to the back post, allowing striker Anastasios Douvikas to convert with ease only six minutes into the match.
In the second half, Aspas came close to doubling the lead, striking the post, while Borja Iglesias had a goal ruled out for offside.
Getafe, who had settled for draws in their last three encounters with a score of 1-1, faced an uphill battle after Juan Berrocal received a red card in the 65th minute, diminishing their chances for an equalizer.
Celta’s goalkeeper David Soria noted that the red card was a turning point for the match, stating that it significantly limited their options to respond.
Following this match, Getafe finds themselves at 16th on the La Liga table, having secured just one victory from their first twelve matches.
Meanwhile, Celta Vigo climbed into the top half of the standings, accumulating 16 points over the same number of games.
Soria emphasized the urgency for Getafe to transform their competitive spirit into actual wins, acknowledging that while the process is challenging, it is essential for the team’s progress.
