NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Rookie quarterback Drake Maye is set to start for the New England Patriots this Sunday after successfully passing through the concussion protocol. Meanwhile, the Tennessee Titans are sticking with backup Mason Rudolph for the third consecutive game, as Will Levis remains sidelined.
The Patriots (2-6) confirmed on Saturday that Maye has cleared the concussion protocol and is no longer on the injury report. Although he practiced on a limited basis throughout the week, he was initially listed as questionable after leaving last week’s game against the Jets.
During that game, Maye sustained a helmet-to-helmet hit from Jets linebacker Jermaine Sherwood while executing an 18-yard scramble. Sherwood was not penalized for the incident, but the NFL did issue a fine.
This season, Maye has demonstrated impressive performance by throwing at least two touchdown passes in two of his three starts. His appearance in this week’s game marks the participation of two top-seven picks from April’s draft, with Maye being selected as the No. 3 overall pick from North Carolina and Tennessee choosing left tackle J.C. Latham at No. 7 out of Alabama.
Levis has been dealing with a sprained right throwing shoulder and was deemed questionable as he also practiced on a limited basis throughout the week. In his absence, Rudolph delivered the Titans’ most notable passing performance last week despite their loss to Detroit.
On the Patriots’ side, safety Kyle Dugger has been deactivated for the second consecutive week.
The Titans will miss cornerback L’Jarius Sneed and running back Tyjae Spears for their third straight game. Additionally, Tennessee has opted to deactivate right guard Dillon Radunz after he started in the first seven games; he did not practice all week due to a foot injury.
