Liverpool secured a place in the quarterfinals of the English League Cup as they continued their title defense, emerging victorious with a 3-2 scoreline against Brighton on Wednesday night.
The match saw Netherlands forward Cody Gakpo shine, netting two goals in quick succession during the second half, specifically at the 46th and 63rd minutes at the Amex Stadium.
Luis Diaz also contributed to the win, scoring the third goal for Liverpool in the 85th minute, providing some breathing room before Brighton fought back with a goal from Simon Adingra.
Although Tariq Lamptey managed to score Brighton’s second goal just before the match concluded in the 90th minute, Liverpool managed to withstand the pressure to secure their advancement.
Having claimed the League Cup a record ten times, Liverpool’s most recent triumph came last season, where they defeated Chelsea in the final.
On the same night, five additional matches in the last-16 stage were taking place, with Manchester City taking on Tottenham and Manchester United facing Leicester, just two days after parting ways with manager Erik ten Hag.
