A man from Kansas has received a life sentence for starting a fire that led to the tragic deaths of his girlfriend and their two daughters.
Kyle Tyler, who is 33 years old, will have to serve a minimum of 25 years before he can be considered for parole. The sentencing took place on Wednesday, where he was also handed an additional 11-year sentence due to two counts of arson, according to reports from a local news outlet.
When firefighters responded to the fire at a Topeka home in January 2023, they discovered Tyler on a back deck with a butane torch lighter. Upon entering the residence, they extinguished two separate flames, which were later confirmed to have been deliberately ignited in both the living room and the basement.
Tragically, Tyler’s girlfriend, Genny Fitzpatrick, age 30, and their 1-year-old daughter, Kourtney Tyler, were found deceased on the second floor of the home. Additionally, his 9-year-old daughter, Peyton Tyler, succumbed to her injuries after being transported from her bedroom to a hospital.
Authorities have indicated that all three victims died primarily due to smoke inhalation, as stated by Shawnee County District Attorney Mike Kagay.
As part of a plea deal made in August, Tyler pleaded guilty, which led to the dismissal of two additional murder charges and two counts of aggravated child endangerment, as documented in court records.
