SOELDEN, Austria — Marco Odermatt of Switzerland has been honored as the “Skier of the Year” by the ski journalist federation, taking over from Mikaela Shiffrin, who received the accolade for the third consecutive time last year.
The 26-year-old athlete had an outstanding season, clinching 13 World Cup victories while securing his third consecutive overall title. Two years prior, he was also recognized with the Skieur d’Or AIJS Serge Lang award after achieving two gold medals at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.
In their announcement, the AIJS highlighted Odermatt’s remarkable season, noting his initial victories in the downhill category and an unprecedented streak of nine giant slalom wins. His quest for a record-equalling tenth win ended when he was unable to finish in the giant slalom at the World Cup finals last March.
Additionally, the AIJS commended Odermatt for his approachable nature and his willingness to engage with fans and the international media.
In the past decade, other notable recipients of this prestigious award include France’s Alexis Pinturault, Italy’s Federica Brignone, along with Austrians Marcel Hirscher and Anna Veith, both of whom have made significant contributions to the sport.
