AUSTIN, Texas — In an impressive display, Alyssa Thompson netted her inaugural goal for the United States, while Jaedyn Shaw secured the decisive goal in the 85th minute, leading the Americans to a 3-1 victory over Iceland in an exhibition match on Thursday night.

Sophia Smith also contributed with a goal, marking the U.S. team’s first match since clinching the gold medal at the Paris Olympics this summer, now under the guidance of new head coach Emma Hayes.

Thompson, at just 19 years old, has made a significant impact, having previously been excluded from the Olympic roster. This match marked her third start for the national team, and she has been in excellent form, with five goals in her last eight appearances for Angel City in the National Women’s Soccer League.

The young forward showcased her talent by sending the ball deftly past Iceland’s goalkeeper into the far upper corner in the 39th minute.

“Wearing the jersey and stepping onto the field felt surreal,” Thompson expressed. “Scoring my first goal is an indescribable feeling. I’m just overwhelmed with happiness.”

Iceland equalized in the 56th minute through Selma Sol Magnusdottir’s long-range shot, marking her fifth goal on the international stage and just the third goal conceded by the United States in 11 games under the new head coach, who took the reins in May.

Shaw’s decisive goal slipped between the legs of Iceland’s goalkeeper Telma Ivarsdottir, followed closely by Smith scoring from a distance just three minutes later.

The starting eleven featured six players who played in the gold medal match against Brazil. Notably, defender Emily Sonnett made her 100th appearance for the national team.

Yazmeen Ryan also made her debut for the United States, coming on as a substitute in the second half.

The two teams are set to meet for another friendly match on Sunday in Nashville, Tennessee. Following that, the United States will face Argentina in Louisville, Kentucky, on the upcoming Wednesday.

Trinity Rodman will be absent from these three matches as she continues her recovery from a back injury, while Crystal Dunn was not included in the roster due to a personal obligation.
