SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers have announced that standout wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk will not return for the remainder of the season due to a severe knee injury.
Coach Kyle Shanahan revealed on Monday that examinations confirmed Aiyuk has torn ligaments in his right knee, specifically his ACL, which will require him to undergo major reconstructive surgery.
This injury occurred while Aiyuk was making a catch in the red zone late in the second quarter during a 28-18 defeat against the Kansas City Chiefs.
The injury took place just before halftime when Aiyuk was struck on the knee after securing a pass.
He remained on the ground for several minutes before being taken off the field on a cart and subsequently ruled out for the remainder of the game.
Aiyuk’s unfortunate circumstances come after he signed a four-year contract extension worth $120 million in August, following an extended period of contract negotiations. This season, he recorded 25 receptions for 374 yards and was recognized as a second-team All-Pro last year, racking up 1,342 receiving yards.
In light of Aiyuk’s absence, the pressure will increase on first-round rookie Ricky Pearsall, who made his NFL debut on Sunday, managing three receptions.
Pearsall’s return to football comes just 50 days after he was shot in the chest during a robbery in San Francisco, showcasing his resilience and determination.
Aiyuk’s injury adds to the growing list of challenges for the 49ers, who are already missing All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey due to Achilles tendinitis.
McCaffrey has been participating in workouts over the past few weeks and may be on track for a return soon.
Additionally, the team has faced significant absences from other crucial players, including linebacker Dre Greenlaw, defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, and safety Talanoa Hufanga.
These injuries have contributed to a disappointing start for the 49ers, who are struggling with a 3-4 record this season.
The team is currently fighting to regain their footing and secure a playoff spot after reaching the NFC Championship game for the past three consecutive seasons and coming up short in last year’s Super Bowl against Kansas City.
