Roma maintained its flawless record in the Women’s Champions League by overwhelming Galatasaray with a 6-1 victory, while Real Madrid secured its first win of the tournament with a convincing 4-0 triumph over Celtic on Thursday.
After defeating the two-time champion Wolfsburg 1-0 in their opening match, Roma has now accumulated six points in Group A. In contrast, Galatasaray, which made history as the first Turkish team to progress to the group stage, finds itself at the bottom of the standings.
In the later fixtures, Wolfsburg faced eight-time champions Lyon, and Chelsea traveled to Dutch club Twente in Group B.
Roma showcased their dominance in a match against the Turkish champions in Istanbul. Summer recruit Hawa Cissoko made an impressive debut, scoring in the seventh minute after heading in a corner kick from Manuela Giugliano.
Valentina Giacinti extended the lead to 2-0 in the 24th minute, finding herself free at the penalty mark to connect with a cross from Verena Hanshaw. Although Giugliano missed a penalty just before halftime, Emilie Haavi netted Roma’s third goal early in the second half with a powerful shot past goalkeeper Gamze Yaman. Giugliano finally marked her name on the score sheet with a close-range finish, pushing the score to 4-0. Andrea Staskova then scored a solitary goal for Galatasaray, but Roma’s substitutes Marta Pandini and Alice Corelli added to the tally, rounding off the match with a comprehensive victory.
On the other hand, Real Madrid showcased their attacking prowess by netting three goals within just 11 minutes against Celtic in Group B. After suffering a 3-2 defeat to Chelsea in their opener and only managing a 1-1 draw with rivals Atlético Madrid in the weekend’s derby, the Spanish side was eager to bounce back.
Caroline Weir initiated the scoring with a stunning left-footed strike from outside the box in the seventh minute. Celtic kept the scoreline close until the 72nd minute, when Signe Bruun headed in the second for Madrid. Just eight minutes later, Caroline Moller deftly lobbed the ball over goalkeeper Kelsey Daugherty to secure a commanding 3-0 advantage. Linda Caicedo then added to the score from the penalty spot. Celtic, making its debut in the group stage, suffered back-to-back defeats and remains yet to find the back of the net.
