ASHBURN, Va. — Brian Robinson Jr. is eager to return to the field and play for the Washington Commanders, particularly in the upcoming game against the Carolina Panthers. Last weekend, he was unable to participate due to a knee injury that played a role in the team’s defeat against the Baltimore Ravens, which snapped their four-game winning streak.
The absence of Robinson was felt significantly, especially as the team struggled with their ground game, relying on players like Austin Ekeler, Jeremy McNichols, and quarterback Jayden Daniels. Having Robinson back on the field would provide a substantial advantage, particularly since Washington is favored to win. “It’s going to be helpful to have B-Rob back — I’m looking forward to it,” Daniels mentioned. He added that regardless of Robinson’s status, the team aims to be a dominant force in the run game. “B-Rob is a special player; he’s able to run the ball, break tackles, and people don’t give him enough credit for his receiving skills.”
Despite not playing against the Ravens, Robinson remains the team’s rushing leader with 325 yards and five touchdowns. He has also contributed with eight receptions for 68 yards, showcasing a successful partnership with Ekeler in the backfield. “We try to complement each other in the best way we can,” Robinson explained. “If I need to be physical to create space for Austin to make plays, then that’s what we do.”
In Robinson’s absence, the Commanders managed only 52 rushing yards against Baltimore, marking their lowest output of the season. This was influenced by a multitude of factors, including being down in the game and facing one of the NFL’s top defenses. “The last game was more of an issue of execution rather than just personnel,” remarked rookie left tackle Brandon Coleman. He praised the efforts of his teammates and emphasized the need to create openings for the backs.
Head Coach Dan Quinn expressed the challenge of not having Robinson available but acknowledged that the decision was made in the best interest of both the player and the team. Robinson appreciated the support from Quinn and general manager Adam Peters for prioritizing his health. “It helped tremendously. I’m quite prideful, always ready to play, but I’m grateful for their guidance,” he said.
Robinson was limited in practice on Wednesday but felt he was returning to form, stating, “I don’t want to miss any time on the field, so being back is fantastic. I felt good today. Coaches will make the final call, but I feel like myself again.”
In other news, the team has placed defensive tackle Jonathan Allen, who is facing a season-ending injury, along with defensive end Javontae Jean-Baptiste on injured reserve. Additionally, DE Dorance Armstrong missed practice due to a rib injury, though Quinn does not anticipate a long-term absence for Jean-Baptiste. To address the roster changes, the Commanders have signed DT Sheldon Day from the practice squad and DE Jalyn Holmes, a free agent who previously played for the New York Jets this season.
