INEOS Britannia achieved a significant victory by clinching its first race against Emirates Team New Zealand in the America’s Cup finals on Wednesday.
However, the British team still finds itself trailing with a score of 4-1 in the first-to-seven race series. Race 6 is scheduled for later today.
During the pre-start phase, New Zealand’s Taihoro struggled as it lost lift off its foils, which left them out of position while Britannia took advantage by maneuvering around them on two occasions.
With winds just above the minimum of 6.5 knots, maintaining the 75-foot monohulls on their foils was crucial for both teams.
Ultimately, when Britannia crossed the finish line, New Zealand was trailing significantly, almost 1,200 meters behind.
Thus far in the competition, New Zealand had performed exceptionally well, sweeping the first four races against Britannia in front of the scenic Barcelona beachfront.
The New Zealand team seeks to secure the Auld Mug, the oldest trophy in international sports, for a third consecutive time and a total of five victories.
In contrast, the British team is striving to capture the prestigious trophy for the first time in its 173-year existence, marking their first final appearance in sixty years.
