FULTON, Mo. — In a tragic incident that unfolded early Monday morning, a man from Texas lost his life, and two law enforcement deputies sustained injuries during a traffic stop in central Missouri, according to local authorities.
The Callaway County Sheriff’s Office reported that a deputy initiated the traffic stop on Interstate 70 at approximately 3:35 a.m. Shortly thereafter, a second deputy joined the scene to assist.
During the encounter, it was revealed that the 37-year-old driver had multiple felony warrants outstanding against him. As the situation escalated, dispatchers received notifications that the suspect was resisting arrest, and gunfire was exchanged soon after.
The man who was stopped ultimately succumbed to his injuries at the scene. One of the deputies involved was taken into surgery and is listed in critical condition, while the other deputy was reported to be stable.
At this time, authorities have chosen not to release the identities of those involved and have provided limited details regarding the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including which party discharged their weapon. Attempts to obtain further information from the sheriff’s office were met with a voicemail response.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s specialized division, focusing on drug and crime control, will conduct the investigation into this incident.
