In Mumbai, a prominent political figure connected to the film industry was tragically shot and killed just weeks ahead of crucial state elections. Baba Siddique, aged 66, was gunned down multiple times outside his son’s office on a Saturday night and was later pronounced dead at Lilavati Hospital.
Siddique had a longstanding affiliation with the Indian National Congress party but had recently transitioned to a regional party in power in Maharashtra. His connections in Bollywood were noteworthy, renowned for hosting extravagant gatherings frequented by numerous film stars.
Ajit Pawar, the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra and a fellow party member, expressed his deep shock and sorrow over the incident. In a statement, he assured the public that the situation would be thoroughly investigated, emphasizing that the police would identify and penalize not only the attackers but also those who orchestrated the assault.
According to reports from Press Trust of India, law enforcement has made arrests of two suspects linked to the shooting, while they are also on the lookout for another individual involved. Broadcaster NDTV reported that the detained suspects identified themselves as members of a criminal gang, notorious for previously committing multiple homicides.
With elections in the state of Maharashtra anticipated to occur in November, this violent act adds an ominous backdrop to the political landscape, stirring unease among constituents and party officials alike.
