In Erwin, Tennessee, families and supporters have been gathering for vigils to honor the six workers at a plastics factory who disappeared during the flooding caused by Hurricane Helene. The storm devastated the small town of Erwin and claimed the lives of at least 227 people across six states, including four Mexican American workers from the factory.

The community, especially the small Latino population in Erwin, has been deeply affected by the tragedy. Two state investigations have been launched to determine if the company, Impact Plastics, should have taken more steps to protect its workers as the storm approached. Despite the company’s claims that employees were evacuated before the flood hit, surviving workers say the evacuation began too late, leaving them clinging to pipes on truck flatbeds for hours.

The Nolichucky River rose to a record 30 feet on the day of the storm, causing widespread devastation in the area. Employees at the plastics plant continued to work even as alerts of possible flooding were issued, leading to questions about the timing of the evacuation. Many families of the lost workers are struggling to understand why their loved ones were not evacuated earlier.

The Hispanic community in Erwin has expressed frustration over the lack of immediate translation services and assistance from state officials following the disaster. Families felt overshadowed by the rescue operation at the hospital, which received more media attention than the plant workers. Despite these challenges, nightly vigils have brought the community together to pray and honor the memories of the lost workers.

Erwin Mayor Glenn White highlighted the unity between Hispanic and white residents in coming together to support each other during this difficult time. The tragedy has deeply impacted families who have made Erwin their home, with some choosing to lay their loved ones to rest in the local cemetery to signify their ties to the community.

The outpouring of support from the community, coupled with the shared grief and solidarity at the vigils, reflects the resilience and unity of Erwin in the face of tragedy. As the town mourns the loss of lives and grapples with the aftermath of the storm, the spirit of togetherness and remembrance shines through in their collective response to this heartbreaking event.
