Assistant coach Twila Kilgore is parting ways with the U.S. women’s national team to explore new opportunities. The announcement of Kilgore’s departure was made by U.S. Soccer on Tuesday.
Kilgore took on the role of interim head coach of the U.S. team after Vlatko Andonovski resigned last summer post the team’s elimination in the round of 16 at the Women’s World Cup. During Kilgore’s tenure, the team achieved a record of 10 wins, 1 loss, and 3 draws. Furthermore, under her guidance, the team clinched victories at the CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup and the SheBelieves Cup. Subsequently, she resumed her position as an assistant coach when Emma Hayes was appointed as the new head coach in late May. Hayes led the United States to a gold medal at the Paris Olympics.
Expressing her thoughts on her time with the team, Kilgore stated, “Being a part of this storied program as both an assistant and interim head coach has been both a privilege and rewarding experience. What this group has accomplished during a time of transition is a testament to all involved and I believe an indication of continued success to come.”
Although the 44-year-old Kilgore did not disclose her future plans, she has previously worked as an assistant coach for the Houston Dash in the National Women’s Soccer League and served as the head coach of the UC Davis women’s team.
This news marks a transition for the U.S. women’s national team as they navigate changes within their coaching staff. The team will now be seeking a replacement for Kilgore as they continue their pursuit of excellence in the world of women’s soccer.
