Los Angeles Dodgers’ Clayton Kershaw is currently facing a setback in his recovery from a toe injury, with no immediate plans for the star pitcher to resume facing hitters. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts stated that there hasn’t been any notable improvement in Kershaw’s condition, indicating a concerning lack of progress in his rehabilitation process.
Kershaw, a three-time Cy Young Award winner, landed on the injured list on August 31st due to a bone spur in his left big toe. This injury has hindered his ability to perform at his usual level on the field. Despite playing catch on Tuesday, Kershaw has yet to advance to facing hitters as there are still undisclosed factors impeding his progress.
The veteran left-hander, aged 36, had a delayed start to this season due to offseason shoulder surgery. Before his injury, Kershaw had a record of 2 wins and 2 losses with a 4.50 ERA in seven starts. His absence from the mound has been felt by the Dodgers, especially during a critical three-game series against the San Diego Padres.
Kershaw’s contract, originally a one-year deal signed in February with a 2025 player option worth $5 million, includes performance-based incentives that could boost his earnings by $15 million. However, for these incentives to materialize, Kershaw needs to demonstrate his fitness by the end of the current season.
Roberts expressed hope that Kershaw’s situation will become clearer in the coming days, allowing for a better assessment of his readiness to return to active play. The Dodgers are relying on Kershaw’s determination and commitment to make himself available for the team whenever required.
