Harris debates Trump on economy and abortion, showcasing different approach from Biden

Donald Trump and Kamala Harris engaged in their first and potentially only debate on Tuesday night. Harris, the Democratic vice president with a legal background, aimed to highlight Trump’s shortcomings while also connecting with voters to introduce herself as the Democratic presidential nominee. On the other side, Trump, a Republican seeking a third term, worked to portray Harris as a disconnected liberal and win over wavering suburban voters, especially women, who may be put off by his leadership style and personal attacks.

The 90-minute debate took place in Philadelphia’s National Constitutional Center with no live audience as per agreed rules, which included muting the candidates’ microphones when it wasn’t their turn to speak. Harris was assertive from the start, confronting Trump over various issues such as trade tariffs affecting the middle class, the Capitol riot, and women’s rights. She criticized Trump for the size of his rally crowds, a point that seemed to irk him as the debate progressed.

During an economic debate segment, Harris and Trump clashed over tariffs, the trade deficit, and inflation. Trump labeled Harris a “Marxist” despite positive reviews of her economic plans from reputable sources. Harris emphasized Trump’s lack of a coherent economic strategy, contrasting it with her own vision for the country. Despite this, a poll showed slightly more trust in Trump over Harris on economic matters.

Both candidates vigorously defended their stances on abortion, a crucial issue particularly since Trump appointed Supreme Court justices potentially open to overturning Roe v. Wade. Harris strongly advocated for women’s rights to make their own decisions, while Trump insisted on leaving the issue to the states and incorrectly claimed Democrats support post-birth abortion. Polls indicate considerable public opposition to overturning Roe v. Wade.

During the debate, Trump objected to Harris interrupting him, a move viewers couldn’t hear due to microphone rules. In a memorable exchange, Trump referenced Harris’ past remark to Mike Pence about speaking without interruption in a previous debate. The debate provided a platform for both candidates to emphasize their contrasting visions and styles to undecided voters.
