U.S. Open finalists Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe will not be part of the United States’ Davis Cup roster for the upcoming group-stage matches. Instead, the U.S. Tennis Association has selected Brandon Nakashima, Mackie McDonald, Reilly Opelka, Austin Krajicek, and Rajeev Ram for the competition taking place in Zhuhai, China starting next week. The American team will compete against Chile, Germany, and Slovakia in a round-robin group format, with the top two countries from each group advancing to the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga, Spain on Nov. 19-24.
Fritz emerged victorious over Tiafoe in a five-set match during the U.S. Open semifinals, marking the first time in 19 years that two American men faced off in this stage of the tournament. However, both players will sit out of the Davis Cup matches. In the final, Fritz is set to compete against Italy’s No. 1 player, Jannik Sinner, who interestingly is also not included in Italy’s Davis Cup roster for the group stage.
