As fall approaches, a former industrial building in Omaha transforms into a bustling hub for more than 200 girls aged 11 to 14 training at the Premier Nebraska Volleyball facility. The girls, clad in T-shirts, shorts, and kneepads, hone their volleyball skills under the guidance of coaches, most of whom are former college players, on eight practice courts. Similar scenes unfold nationwide as young athletes gear up for fall tryouts and a competitive season typically running from January to April.

The popularity of girls’ volleyball in the United States has been on the rise, with participation steadily increasing each year since 1980, with a record number of high school players in 2022-23. More girls now play high school volleyball than basketball in all but nine states, showcasing the sport’s widespread appeal. The surge in participation can be attributed to various factors, including the sport’s energy, teamwork emphasis, and the opportunity for girls to showcase assertiveness and leadership in a graceful manner.

The growth of girls’ volleyball has been accompanied by efforts to promote diversity and inclusivity in the sport. While club volleyball can entail a significant time and financial commitment, clubs often provide need-based financial aid to ensure all players have access to the sport. Initiatives like USA Volleyball’s “Starlings” program aim to bring volleyball to underserved communities, while the newly established League One Volleyball (LOVB) prioritizes accessibility by directing resources toward disadvantaged areas.

The high-energy volleyball culture fosters camaraderie and empowerment among female athletes, promoting a supportive environment where teammates celebrate each other’s successes. The sport’s appeal extends beyond the court, instilling confidence, self-esteem, and valuable life skills in young players. As girls across the country gear up for the upcoming season, the growth and increasing diversity within girls’ volleyball underscore its enduring popularity and positive impact on participants.
