In Washington, D.C., a veteran police officer was injured on Wednesday during an incident where a suspect’s firearm accidentally discharged as authorities were attempting to retrieve the weapon from a storm drain. Jeffery Carroll, the executive assistant chief of police at the Metropolitan Police Department, disclosed that the officer, who has been serving for over 25 years, was airlifted to a hospital after being shot in the Northeast region of the city. Details about the officer’s condition were not immediately available.
Authorities observed an individual exiting a suspicious vehicle, fleeing on foot, and ultimately leaping onto Interstate 295. This person discarded a gun into a storm drain before making a getaway on a motorcycle. Efforts to retrieve the weapon from the drain resulted in it discharging accidentally and striking the officer at least once, as detailed by Carroll. Law enforcement is currently on the lookout for the suspect responsible for depositing the gun in the drain.
