Manny Machado had a standout performance with four hits to lead the San Diego Padres to an 8-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies. Dylan Cease pitched effectively for the Padres, holding the Rockies to just one hit until the sixth inning. Luis Campusano contributed offensively with a home run and a single, while Bryce Johnson added two hits and two RBIs.
The Padres are on track to possibly secure their ninth consecutive series win since the All-Star break if they can clinch a victory on Sunday. Michael Toglia provided a highlight for the Rockies with a two-run homer in the sixth inning, marking his 20th of the season.
Cease ran into trouble in the sixth inning, allowing three runs before being relieved. Despite yielding three runs on three hits over 5 2/3 innings, Cease managed to strike out five batters. San Diego capitalized on two Colorado errors to score two unearned runs in the sixth inning, further extending their lead.
On the injury front, there is no definitive timeline for the return of Padres’ pitcher Yu Darvish. Manager Mike Shildt confirmed reaching out to Darvish on his birthday, showing support for the player dealing with personal matters. Darvish has been away from the team since late May due to a left groin strain and subsequent family issues.
In the upcoming series finale, Padres’ Joe Musgrove is scheduled to make his second start following a stint on the injured list. On the other side, Bradley Blalock will make his second start for the Rockies since joining the team from Milwaukee.
