Jonny DeLuca’s run from a ninth-inning error helped the Tampa Bay Rays defeat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-4, snapping the Diamondbacks’ six-game winning streak. DeLuca scored on a misplayed single by Brandon Lowe after drawing a walk from Justin Martinez. Corbin Carroll of the Diamondbacks tied the game at 4 with a two-run homer in the ninth, off Rays closer Pete Fairbanks.
In the eighth inning, Josh Lowe’s two-run single off Ryan Thompson put the Rays ahead 4-2. The Diamondbacks managed run-scoring singles in the first inning from Joc Pederson and Lourdes Gurriel Jr., maintaining a spot in the NL wild-card race despite various injuries. The team has been on an impressive run, winning 20 of 26 games since the All-Star break and 30 of 41 since late June.
Ryan Pepiot of the Rays allowed two unearned runs over 5 1/3 innings in his first start since mid-July, following a hiatus due to a knee infection. Arizona’s Ryne Nelson pitched 6 1/3 innings, giving up one run and striking out six.
Dylan Carlson added to the Rays’ score with a home run and an RBI single in the fifth and eighth innings, respectively. He had previously hit only two home runs in 102 games. Meanwhile, Arizona’s Eugenio Suárez had notable at-bats, including a swinging strike and an error-charged pop fly.
In terms of injuries, Diamondbacks’ 1B Christian Walker and All-Star 2B Ketel Marte were both dealing with respective conditions. Walker was participating in batting cage activities, while Marte missed his third consecutive game due to a left ankle sprain.
The next game was set to feature Arizona’s Zac Gallen against Tampa Bay’s Jeffrey Springs.
