The Harris-Walz campaign also echoed their commitment to the debate, provided Vance shows up as agreed. Senator Vance, accepting the invitation for October 1, further threw down the gauntlet by challenging Walz to an earlier debate on September 18.

Speculation had arisen regarding whether Walz and Vance would engage in a debate before the November 5 general election, particularly following recent developments where President Joe Biden withdrew from the campaign, and Democrats selected Vice President Kamala Harris as their nominee. Vance has primarily focused his attention on Harris, with criticisms directed at Walz, including queries about his service history as a retired Army National Guardsman.

Former President Donald Trump expressed his desire for Vance to debate Walz on CBS, which had been engaged in discussions to finalize a suitable date for the encounter. This debate comes after the top-of-the-ticket debate between Trump and Harris on ABC News, set for September 10. Trump has also been in negotiations for debates on alternative dates and networks, with proposals from Fox News for September 4 and NBC News for September 25.
