Netflix supports Meghan and Harry despite documentary flop and $100M deal rumors

Despite a series of setbacks, Netflix is showing no signs of backing down from its commitment to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. The streaming giant insists it’s excited about their future projects, including a highly anticipated romance film and Meghan’s lifestyle cooking series, With Love Meghan.

Disappointing documentary sparks rumors

The couple’s £80 million deal with Netflix has been under scrutiny. The documentary series Polo, which chronicled Prince Harry’s love for the sport, was a major disappointment. Critics slammed it as “boring,” and with the couple failing to promote it, rumors spread that Netflix might cut ties.

Netflix reaffirms support

But Netflix isn’t backing away. Bela Bajaria, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer, reassured fans and the media that the company is still “excited” about working with the Sussexes. “We have Meghan’s new show coming out, and it’s going to be great,” Bajaria said. “It’s a fresh take on a lifestyle show. It’ll showcase California, Montecito, and nature. People will love it.”

For Bajaria, the show’s appeal is clear. She mentioned how the show made her want to try out the easy recipes, describing it as a “great take” on lifestyle television with practical, easy-to-follow tips. It’s a feel-good project that could be just the boost Netflix needs after the recent disappointment with Polo.

New romance film in development

Additionally, Meghan’s project isn’t stopping at cooking. She’s also working on adapting the bestselling romance novel Meet Me at the Lake by Carley Fortune for the screen. While it’s still in the early stages of development, Bajaria emphasized Netflix’s enthusiasm for the book. “It’s a great story, and we’re excited about it,” she said, confirming that the project is moving forward.

This marks the first time a Netflix executive has gone public to support the couple’s future on the platform. Despite the drama surrounding their earlier projects, the streaming service seems eager to continue collaborating with them.

John Mulaney’s savage jokes at Netflix event

However, not everyone is convinced. At Netflix’s 2025 Preview Event in Los Angeles, comedian John Mulaney made a savage jab at Harry and Meghan’s deal. During his presentation, he mocked the couple for entering into a deal “without a specific plan.” The joke was met with laughter, but it also pointed to growing skepticism about the couple’s content at Netflix.

PR brochure and media reaction

Interestingly, while Mulaney’s roast of the Sussexes had the crowd laughing, Netflix’s new PR brochure for 2025 didn’t feature With Love Meghan or any other Sussex projects. In fact, Bajaria didn’t mention their shows once during her hour-long presentation of Netflix’s upcoming lineup.

Mulaney’s quip came at a time when there’s been ongoing speculation about whether Netflix will keep supporting the couple. Critics have raised concerns over their ability to deliver hits after Polo flopped. Some have even called them “grifters,” citing the couple’s lack of major hits despite their massive Netflix deal.

Still, Netflix remains confident. Despite the snarky comments and media chatter, the streaming service insists that it is all in on Meghan and Harry. Time will tell if their new projects live up to expectations.

For now, Bajaria and Netflix executives are keeping their faith in the couple. “We are excited for everything they’re working on,” Bajaria said. “There’s so much to look forward to.”
