Musk urges federal workers to justify roles more often

The chaotic atmosphere surrounding the federal workforce is expected to persist, as the U.S. government’s HR agency deliberates on how to meet the expectations set out by Elon Musk. Recently, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) advised agency leaders that their staff did not have to adhere to a new directive influenced by Musk, which required employees to report their recent achievements or risk termination. However, a subsequent memo from OPM indicated that similar requests might arise in the future, and non-compliance could lead to sanctions.

Acting Director Charles Ezell suggested that agencies consider incorporating expectations for employees to submit activity or accomplishment reports into their Weekly Activity Reports. He emphasized that agencies should consider appropriate actions regarding employees who do not respond to these requests.

Initially, OPM had sent an email with the subject “what did you do last week?”, asking recipients to respond with approximately five bullet points of their accomplishments. This communication added to the complexity of the situation.

The matter appeared to remain unresolved as President Donald Trump remarked during a session with reporters that the request was “somewhat voluntary,” but added that non-compliance might result in job loss. Trump reiterated claims that taxpayer money was being used for non-existent employees, suggesting further opportunities for employees to report their activities.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt revealed that over 1 million federal employees had responded to Musk’s request—less than half of the estimated 2.4 million federal workforce members. Leavitt confirmed that the idea originated from Musk, integrating management styles he uses in his companies, with the administration working cohesively as a team.

Federal workers, however, were amidst conflicting instructions. An anonymous employee shared that they were initially informed the request was optional, but, anticipating repercussions, chose to submit their accomplishments.

Elon Musk maintained pressure on this issue via his social media platform, criticizing those opposing within the administration. He remarked on the simplicity of the request and highlighted rising unemployment numbers in the nation’s capital, portraying it as a positive development.

Despite Musk functioning as a top adviser to Trump, limitations are reportedly holding him back from more severe cuts in government spending. He expressed a commitment to action but acknowledged constraints.

Although the Department of Government Efficiency was conceptualized by Musk, he is not leading the team. The White House later identified Amy Gleason as the responsible figure, following confusion regarding the position’s leadership. Several members resigned in protest over the transformation aligned with Musk’s goals.

Musk’s increasing influence has drawn backlash from both Democrats and some Republicans who fear political repercussions. Public opinion polls indicate mixed sentiments about Trump’s decision to involve Musk prominently in his administration. Many Americans have divided views on whether Musk is trimming excessive expenses or essential programs.

Republican Rep. Lisa McClain declared her party’s alignment with voter demands for change, as purportedly communicated during the last election. Moreover, Alina Habba, a former Trump legal team member now serving as a White House counselor, emphasized the need for the government workforce to align with the President’s priorities.

Meanwhile, White House press secretary Leavitt and two other officials face a lawsuit from The Associated Press, which claims they were penalized due to editorial decisions. Conversely, the White House claims the AP failed to adhere to an executive order concerning terminology related to the Gulf of Mexico.
